91´«Ã½’ Advanced Quenching Capability

91´«Ã½, Hermitage, PA has successfully vacuum hardened and tempered a 20,000 lb. load of H-13 roll dies.  The heat treatment was done in Solar’s newest furnace installation (Feb. ‘04), purchased from Solar Manufacturing, Telford, PA.

Several engineering features in the 60″ wide x 48″ high x 144″ long, 2 bar furnace make this Solar facility one of the few places in the country that could successfully process load of dies this size.  Solar’s advanced quenching furnace combines a number of design innovations that can process super large loads of tool steel.

Furnace innovations include a new blower design for 2 bar quenching furnaces that is enhanced by 5,000 rpm fan speeds, greatly increasing chamber gas velocity.  Additionally, gas nozzles are longer and are directed toward the workload.  The most obvious furnace capability to process heavy loads is the bottom loading truck, which has a 50,000 lb. capacity.

According to Bob Hill, President, 91´«Ã½ of Western PA, Solar’s advanced quenching furnace performance is outstanding and he did not have any doubt the load would be successfully heat treated.  The vacuum heat treated dies were bright and clean, had minimal distortion, with a quenched hardness of HRC 55.  After a triple temper at 1100° F, hardness ranged from 45-47 RC.
